Bajaj RE 60

Bajaj RE 60

Bajaj Auto is planning to begin commercial sales of its RE 60 four wheeler first in Sri Lanka instead of India. Reports say the company's MD Rajiv Bajaj is considering the option of exporting the RE 60 to Sri Lanka as he feels the market there is ideal for such a vehicle.

The Bajaj RE 60 was unveiled just a day before the 2012 Delhi Auto Expo. The Re 60 was displayed at theauto show where senior executives from Renault and Nissan also saw it. It was widely believed that Bajaj Auto would unveil a low cost small car that could compete with the Tata Nano. Renault and Nissan had signed an agreement to market Bajaj's low cost car.

However Bajaj only brought out the Re 60, The RE 60 has only been described as a four wheeler by Bajaj Auto and not as a car. In fact Mr Rajiv Bajaj has also said this new vehicle will be an ideal replacement to the current three wheeled auto rickshaw.

When we think why the RE 60 is being exported to Sri Lanka before its sales in India, the answer lies in the fact that Bajaj has an extensive sales network in the island nation. Another factor in favour of the RE 60 in Sri Lanka is that the auto rickshaw is not considered as a cheap means of transport. In fact t is used mostly as a personal vehicle.

Bajaj Already sells more than 10,000 rickshaws in Sri Lanka and the RE 60 will add to its sales.

The RE 60 is powered by a 200cc engine capable of generating 20bhp. One of its most user friendly feature is its mileage of 35 to 40 kmpl in real world conditions. Designed as a commercial vehicle for the masses, the RE 60 is suitable for operators with a tight budget. Bajaj has not revealed the pricing of its latest vehicle.
